Digital workflow before newspaper printing (Part 1)

for a newspaper printing enterprise, moving towards digitalization is not just as simple as installing a CTP. The digital workflow of CTP front-end must also be carefully selected, because it is related to the economic benefits, production efficiency and investment payback period of printing enterprises that can meet relevant national and international standards

most newspapers digitalize their workflow step by step. The digitalization of workflow can be realized in four stages

prepare for CTP

no matter which stage you choose, you should confirm that the printing enterprise is ready to adopt CTP before the arrival of the equipment installer

phase I: the simplest front-end CTP system

although some newspapers have tasted the benefits of using the new rip with high performance, some newspapers still continue to use the existing rip. The simplest front-end CTP system generally adopts the typesetting software to make up by hand, and then rip processing is carried out, and then transmitted to the controller software such as print console. As long as Rip can output 1200dpi TIFF files, the system is the basic system that can meet the needs of CTP

however, not all Rip can output 1200dpi TIFF files. Some newspapers originally used rip to output non-standard format files, and some have a resolution of only 1000dpi or 1016dpi. At present, many newspaper printing houses use CTF and CTP processes at the same time. They use the same rip to output documents for laser typesetter and computer direct plate making machine. There are also rip good documents received from customers or sent from the delivery place

the method to realize from analog to digital is the conversion of files. At present, there are several conversion tools on the market, such as Clio's Copydot Toolkit (point copy Toolkit). It can realize the conversion of file format and resolution without moire. In addition, it can also convert positive image to negative image

if there is enough rip capability, this simplest system can also be regarded as a fully functional system. However, you must manually determine which pages are on the left and which pages are on the right. Therefore, if you have to deal with a large number of printing plates every day, the operator will soon be confused by the problem of which version is on which side. If so, printing plants should choose automated workflow

the second stage: the basic process of automatic composition

it is recommended that you should use the workflow of automatic composition, because page composition is a labor-intensive work, and it is easy to make mistakes if you are not careful. Adopting automatic workflow can help printing enterprises recover their investment as soon as possible, reduce labor intensity, reduce costs, and obtain high-quality products

in fact, no matter what process system you use, you should first choose a page making software suitable for newspapers. The software accepts a single page sent by the typesetting system. The operator does not need to make up by himself, and the workflow software (such as Cleo's PDF workflow software for newspaper printing plants - yinyitong synapse newsmanager) can complete this work. It will automatically generate full page output after all pages are transmitted. Only after the page is ready, it will not be issued under a special instruction. This automated software makes everything simple. For example, if a newspaper happens to have a black-and-white newspaper on one page and a color newspaper on the other, the software will clearly treat them differently when publishing

when many pages are exposed on the printing plate, it is often necessary to turn the page left, right or center, and adjust it over and over. Using software with the function of making up can solve everything and avoid the waste of version due to human error. Using this workflow is very beneficial to control the production process and quality and reduce the operating cost of the newspaper prepress department

at present, many newspapers run similar processes and have achieved good return on investment

stage III: automatic workflow with load balancing function

the page usage of different newspapers often varies greatly, and some newspapers may need multiple CTPs or rips. In this case, automatic workflow with load balancing function is needed to maximize the use of existing resources and obtain more benefits from investment, so as to ensure efficient production. This process can automatically allocate work to different CTPs according to different plate sizes. If one of the devices breaks down, it can also re allocate work

stage 4: automatic workflow with version management function

if a newspaper has many different versions on the transmission, the typesetting will become more complex, so the workflow software should have the function of version management and fuzzy query of experimental data

when there are more than two versions of a newspaper, the elements of different versions of the newspaper may be the same on some printing plates, but some pictures and texts are only arranged in a certain page, and 1500 people will appear. For example, a newspaper has two different versions. The left-hand page may be the same, while the right-hand page may be different. In this case, three files are required: the left-hand page file with the same content, the right-hand page file of the first version, and the right-hand page file of the second version. The system knows to use these three files to produce two sets of versions. When it receives two of the files, it will automatically output a set of versions (you can also mark the version to tell the operator which set of versions it is). When the third page arrives, the system automatically generates another set. As long as any one of the two same pages is updated, the system will output two new versions

the version management function in the workflow software can control many variable elements, which helps newspapers report more smoothly
